HCC cosmetology students go to great lengths for annual competition

An area of the student conference center was cordoned off Monday for future stylists to compete in the second annual "Stars of Tomorrow" cosmetology competition at Highland Community College.
Armed with combs, hairspray, makeup, and crimping and curling irons, cosmetology students focused for 60 minutes on completing a look in one of four categories: "Hollywood Glamour,"

"Color to the Extreme," "Club Mix," or "Nail Art." Twelve students participated, many in teams of two.

Valley Tech hosts Day of Beauty event for Abby's House

Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School students hosted a Day of Beauty in the school's salon recently, offering free services including haircuts, facials, manicures and scalp treatments to some women who were in need of pampering.
The two-day event accommodated nearly 60 women serviced by Abby's House, a multi-service, nonprofit organization located in Worcester that works with homeless and battered women and children.

Cosmetology industry proves recession proof

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Despite increasing unemployment rates, some workers are finding continuing success in their line of work.

Tobin Hyman moved to Nashville to pursue a career in the music industry.

After nine years, however, the tough economy claimed his job in publishing.

"After piracy and changes started to happen and the recession I needed to figure out my future," he said.

Hyman turned to cosmetology. He is a student at Paul Mitchell the School in Antioch.

Cosmetology school benefits students, employees and customers

WARRENSBURG, Mo.-- Tucked behind the Ridgeview school on Ridgeview Drive is the Warrensburg Area Career Center. And tucked into that building is the cosmetology school.

"People often get lost trying to find this place," Pat Higgins said with a laugh. Higgins is the supervisor of the cosmetology adult program in Warrensburg, and has been working here for 24 years. She sits down in her back office and talks about the annual contest the school recently had, the kind of customers they get, and highlights of the trade.
