In order to obtain a license in Barbering, Cosmetology, Nail Technology, Esthetics, or Electrology in the state of Michigan, individuals must complete the requirements listed below. Other requirements may apply.
Cosmetologist: 1500 hours
Esthetician: 400 hours
Nail Technician: 400 hours
Electrology: 300 hours
Barbering: 1750 hours

Continuing Education Requirements:
The State of Michigan does not currently require continuing education for cosmetology occupations.
Reciprocity:
All applicants licensed in another state may obtain their license in the state of Michigan by making an application to the board, and meeting the requirements of at least 17 years of age and a 9th grade education. No examination is required. For those applicants whose states have requirements less than those in Michigan, a credit of 100 hours for every six (6) months work experience will be awarded.
