Minnesota Cosmetology Licensing Requirements

In order to obtain a license in Cosmetology, Nail Technology, Esthetics, or Barbering in the state of Minnesota, individuals must complete the requirements listed below. Other requirements may apply.

Cosmetologist: 1550 hours
Esthetician: 600 hours
Nail Technician: 350 hours
Barbering: 1500 hours

Licensing Fee Schedule: (Fees subject to change)

Cosmetologist: (Includes Esthetician and Nail Technician)
Initial fee: $90 Active Operator fee: $60

Barber: (Includes exam fee and certificate) $65

Continuing Education Requirements:

Applies to instructors only.

Reciprocity:

Reciprocity may be granted to currently licensed individuals who pass the Minnesota Board Exam, and who have a minimum of 1800 hours of licensed experience within the previous three years.
