New Mexico Cosmetology Licensing Requirements

In order to obtain a license in Manicuring, Cosmetology, Esthetics, Barbering, or Electrology in the state of New Mexico, individuals must complete the requirements listed below. Other requirements may apply.

Cosmetologist: 1600 hours
Barber: 1200 hours
Manicurist/Pedicurist: 350 hours
Esthetician: 600 hours
Electrologist: 600 hours
Manicurist/Esthetician: 600 hours

Master Barber License (original) $25.00
Cosmetologist License (original) $25.00
Manicurist/Pedicurist License (original) $25.00
Manicurist/Esthetician License (original) $25.00
Electrologist License (original) $25.00
Esthetician License (original) $25.00
Reciprocity (original) (No Temporary licenses are issued for persons seeking reciprocity.) $125.00

The annual renewal fee for all listed practitioners is $25.

Reciprocity:

Individuals who have not completed a course of study equal to the requirements of New Mexico may receive credit for work experience. For every six (6) full months of work, the individual will be credited with 150 hours of training. Any individuals that have completed a course with requirements equal to New Mexico must provide a transcript of hours, and a copy of a valid license.
