Illinois Cosmetology Licensing Requirements

In order to obtain a license in Barbering, Cosmetology, Nail Technology, or Esthetics in the state of Illinois, individuals must complete the requirements listed below. Other requirements may apply.

Cosmetologist: 1500 hours
Esthetician: 750 hours
Nail Technician: 350 hours
Barber: 1500 hours

Licensing Fee Schedule: (Fees subject to change)

These fees are for all fields, and are in addition to any examination fees.

Application for Licensure: $30
Renewal of License: $50
License Restoration & Lapsed Renewal: $10
Duplicate License: $20
Certification of License: $20

Continuing Education Requirements:

For cosmetologists, licenses must be renewed every two years. Fourteen (14) hours of continuing education are required.

Reciprocity:

Reciprocity is based on laws in the issuing state compared to Illinois law during the time period in which the applicant was licensed. Illinois does credit individuals for work experience. Home salons and mobile salons are allowed.
